Colonies are branching with densely packed fingers, each of which is relatively fragile. Colonies may cover several square metres.

Colour is pale yellow, and pale polyps are commonly extended in daytime as well as at night, giving a fuzzy appearance to the colonies.

Calices have 10 septa.

The taxonomic name (but not the species) is confused. Weil believes it should be renamed M. aureterna. Veron (2000) gives the authority as (Lyman 1859). Collin et al (2004) amongst others call the species miriabilis (with an extra ‘i’) retaining the authority as here. D. Fautin in "Hexacorallians of the World" refers to the species as M. mirabilis sensu Wells 1973. It may be renamed, but there is also a custom to retain well known names even when an error like this is shown.
