Briareum species 1
Colonies may be single vertical stems, or may divide very near the base, giving rise to small clumps of tall, unbranched stems.

Polyps are large, giving a hairy appearance to this soft coral. Beneath the polyps the surface of the stem may be clearly seen, and the stems are relatively thin.

The species can be abundant on reefs but is rare in seagrass beds.
