Pseudopterogorgia americana

(Gmelin 1791)
This plume-like gorgonian has secondary branches which emerge from opposite sides of the main stem, usually in opposing pairs, i.e. at the same level.

Colonies reach 1 metre tall.

This species produces substantial quantities of mucus, so feels slimy to the touch.
