Colonies are thicker and more chunky than most other members of Mycetophyllia, forming thick top-shaped plates.

Valleys and ridges are deep and narrow, long and meandering and may become irregular in older colonies. They branch and align across the colonies as much as they radiate out from the centre towards the edges. Colours are variable, dark brown or green in low light, with ridges often lighter than valleys.

Colonies are rarely more than 30 cm across.
