An irregularly shaped rope sponge, sometimes tangled or fan-like, usually less than 0.5 m high.

Reddish colour, but covered with abundant golden zooanthids. From a distance this gives it a two-tone colouration. It is similar in this respect to Iotrochota birotulata.
