Colonies form small massive lumps, or large plates in deeper water/shaded habitats, though many younger or smaller ones are encrusting.

Colour is usually yellow, green, grey or light brown in shallow water and grey to chocolate brown in deeper water. It is widespread, being seen mostly in shallow and well-lit water.
