This grows in large bushy colonies which frequently exceed 1 m tall. Commonly they grow out horizontally from walls.

Secondary branches are fine and elongated, giving a fine appearance to this species.

It is often abundant, especially on deep reefs, on steep surfaces and in slightly sedimented areas.
