The branches of this genus of gorgonia are flattened. The distinctive character of P. anceps is that the branches have three or four 'flanges', giving them a cross-section which is Y or even X-shaped, rather than being ribbons.

Polyps emerge from series of pores along the edges of the blades.

P. anceps is the largest in this genus, reaching nearly 1 m tall.
